Introduction to Filmmaking
With Artist in Residence Katherine Reaves
Introducing the aspiring filmmaker to the basics of film language through practice and doing
Discover the power of visual storytelling in this immersive, hands-on filmmaking workshop set at the peaceful and inspiring Graylag Nature Preserve.
Whether you’ve always wanted to make a short film or just love experimenting with your phone camera, this workshop will introduce you to the essential building blocks of filmmaking – then give you the chance to use them in the wild. We’ll explore the language of film through doing: camera angles, shot types, visual composition, and narrative intent.
You’ll be given a creative assignment at random (think “close-up,” “long shot,” or “pan”), and head outdoors to capture a unique piece of the Graylag landscape. After gathering footage, we’ll come back together to share what we’ve captured, discuss the creative choices we made, and collaboratively edit a short film on-site.
This workshop is designed for beginners: people who know how to take a selfie and work their phone or camera but wish to take video production to the next level. Just bring a phone or camera that can record video, plus your curiosity and a sense of play!
Together we’ll learn by doing, by teaching, and by making. Come see the world through a new lens.
