Promoting Healthy and Diverse Forest Habitats

A Workshop for Private and Community Landowners

Join us for a walking tour through a portion of the Graylag Nature Preserve where the overall management philosophy is to promote healthy and diverse forest habitats for wildlife.

During this tour, we will visit areas where commercial timber harvesting has been used to enhance foraging and cover resources for wildlife, improve forest health and value, and to salvage trees from an area damaged in the 2008 tornado. We will also visit an area where natural processes are being allowed to occur without timber harvesting and will discuss how to best conduct timber harvesting near sensitive areas such as vernal pools, streams, and other wetlands. During this tour we will provide an overview for how private and community landowners can steward their forests to meet multiple objectives through careful planning under the guidance of a licensed professional forester and following established best management practices. We will also discuss state and federal financial assistance programs to help you manage your land. Bring your boots and binoculars for a walk on a beautiful property with forestry and wildlife professionals who are happy to answer any questions you have about how to go about stewarding the forests on your land!
