Meet Elizabeth Leone Holmes

2025 Graylag Artist Residency

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Elizabeth (Betsy) Leone Holmes – a painter with a passion for nature who will be our final Artist in Residence for the 2025 season. During her time at Graylag, she will offer a workshop on Nature Journaling. Space is limited, so be sure to register!

A plein air painter, Betsy finds inspiration in the seasons, weather, and light. A former library director, Betsy is also energized by writers and poets who have found the natural world a basis for their work. Recognizing that we are often too busy to notice the beauty around us, Betsy creates paintings and nature journals to remind us of the splendor that is our environment- at all times of the year.

Education is another passion for Betsy; in addition to being the retired Library Director at New Hampshire Institute of Art and art history adjunct professor, she continues to teach plein air painting and art history as a volunteer at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNH, and serves as a volunteer docent at the Currier Museum of Art. When not painting or teaching, Betsy works in a variety of conservation initiatives including serving on the Board of Trustees for the Piscataquog Land Conservancy and monitoring several of their conservation easements. She is the past President of, and writes the newsletter for the Deering Lake Improvement Association, where she is also an invasive species monitor.
